Wahine move up to No. 9 in volleyball
The University of Hawaii women’s volleyball team moved up two spots to No. 9 in this week’s AVCA Coaches’ Poll released on Monday.
The Wahine (14-1 overall and 4-0 in the Western Athletic Conference) defeated Nevada and Fresno State last week.
Illinois (15-0) remained No. 1, followed by UCLA (13-2), Washington (13-1), California (15-2) and Southern California (11-3). Illinois received 56 first-place votes. UCLA received two and Washington and USC got one apiece.
UH plays San Jose State on Saturday, 7 p.m. at Stan Sheriff Center.
Lum named WAC player of the week
Brittani Lum was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after the Hawaii women’s soccer team defeated Utah State and Nevada last week to open WAC play.
Lum, a senior defender, scored a goal in both the 2-1 double-overtime upset of the Aggies and the 5-0 rout of the Wolf Pack. Her score off a corner kick in the 105th minute vs. USU was a golden goal that gave UH its first win over a Division I opponent this season. And her opening score against Nevada contributed to UH’s most lopsided WAC win in four years.
It was the first career WAC honor for the native of Folsom, Calif., who has a team-best five goals this season.
The first-place Wahine (3-8 overall) continue WAC play on the road against Idaho on Friday.
BYUH beats Hilo in women’s soccer
Britt Edman had a goal and an assist and Kim Micheletti tallied another goal to lift Brigham Young University-Hawaii (5-0-1) past Hawaii-Hilo 2-1 in a nonconference women’s soccer match at Hilo on Tuesday.
Moani Hagiwara scored for UHH (2-6-1).
