Ha advances at boxing nationals
Honolulu’s Lisa Ha defeated Maryquenn Vellinga of Salt Lake City, 13-4, on Tuesday to reach the quarterfinals in the 2011 National PAL boxing tournament in Toledo, Ohio.
Ha, fighting in the female 112-pound class, had a walkover on Monday.
Another Hawaii boxer, Haley Pasion, lost to Virginia Fuchs of Kemah, Texas, 26-17, on Tuesday.
All the semifinalists from the female open, 112-, 132- and 165-pound weight classes quality for the 2012 Olympic Trials in February.

UH’s Kua finishes fourth
Hawaii senior TJ Kua finished fourth Tuesday at the Wolf Pack Classic. He was two shots ahead of friend Alex Ching, who is a senior for the University of San Diego.
Kua, a Kamehameha graduate, closed with a 2-under 70 to finish at 218 and lead the Rainbows, who were 13th in the 14-team tournament. It was played at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline, Nev. The course played 7,445 yards, at an elevation of 6,283 feet.
Ching (74—220), a Punahou grad, tied for seventh. It was his third Top-10 finish in as many tries this season. San Jose State won the tournament at 286—881 and the Spartans’ Jay Myers (70—215) was medalist.
UH shot 301 in the final round for a 917 total. Kua was followed by Henry Park (76—229), Tommy Yamashita (773—240), Brian Lee (83—235) and Ryan Kuroiwa (82—245).
Hawaii fifth in USGA women’s state golf
Hawaii is tied for fifth after Tuesday’s opening round of the ninth USGA Women’s State Team Championship, at The Landings Club in Savannah, Ga. There are 51 teams, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, competing in the biennial event. New Hampshire is the only state not to field a team.
Maryland leads the three-day tournament with a 1-under-par total of 143. Hawaii is 10 shots back, with Waiakea junior Ciera Min firing a 75 and Allisen Corpuz and Hana Furuichi each at 78.
Corpuz, a 13-year-old Punahou eighth-grader, is the youngest golfer in the tournament. Hawaii is the youngest team. Furuichi, 14, is an ‘Iolani freshman.
Lajola moving up in world tennis rankings
Aiea’s Dennis Lajola moved up 134spots in the ATP World Rankings, to No. 805, after reaching the final of last week’s $10,000 Futures event in Laguna Niguel, Calif. Lajola lost to top-seeded American Denis Kudla in the final, 6-4, 6-0.
The four-time all-conference player for University of Hawaii won four matches before falling to Kudla. The week before, at another California Futures stop, he won five matches in the qualifier then reached the semifinals of the main draw.
Lajola, 22, who led the Rainbows to three Western Athletic Conference titles and was 2011 WAC Player of the Year, has been a professional since May.
He plans to play next in Indonesia and the Philippines, where he was born.
Free concussion clinic on Thursday
A free Concussion Awareness Coaches Clinic will be held Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the McKinley High School auditorium.
The event, which is open to the public, is to improve and increase awareness of concussions among parents and coaches.

BYUH finishes 13th in Grand Canyon golf
The Brigham Young University-Hawaii men’s golf team finished 13th at the Grand Canyon Fall Classic, which concluded Tuesday.
The Seasiders recorded a final team score of 33-over-par 897.
Remington Schultz (75-75-71—221) finished tied for 27th place, Jon Scolari (76-73-73—222) tied for 31st and Aaron Puzey (74-74-79—227) tied for 45th.
Chico State won the team title with a 5-under 859 and Chico’s Kyle Souza won the individual title at a 7-under 209.
BYUH volleyball holds off Cal Baptist
The Brigham Young University-Hawaii women’s volleyball team rallied to beat Cal Baptist, 25-15, 25-17, 22-25, 22-25, 18-16, on Tuesday in Riverside, Calif.
BYUH freshman Stella Chen had a match-high 22 kills, including kills that tied the game at 14 and 16 and gave the Seasiders match point at 17-16.
BYUH won it with a block. Stella Chen had 18 digs, Michelle Chen had 57 assists, 21 digs and three blocks, and Lauren Hagemeyer added 17 kills and five blocks for BYUH (9-3 overall, 6-1 PacWest).
The Lancers are 8-7 and 1-3.
