Seattle blanks Hawaii in soccer
The Hawaii women’s soccer team got a break from conference play on Sunday, but got no reprieve from its road woes in a 3-0 loss at Seattle University.
UH (3-10) dropped to 0-7 on the mainland this season after the nonconference loss to the Redhawks (9-5).
The teams were scoreless until the 77th minute, then Seattle got free for three goals in rapid succession.
"The good news is that we played much better than we did against Idaho (a 4-2 loss on Friday)," UH coach Michele Nagamine said. "We actually showed up to play today, for 75 minutes. The bad news is we had a 15-minute breakdown. We got scored on on a direct kick, then a 1-v-1 and a corner kick in a period of 12 minutes."
UH was shut out for the sixth time this season. Five of those have come on the road.
Despite the result, Nagamine said she was still glad to have played a nonconference foe before the Rainbow Wahine’s two biggest Western Athletic Conference games of the season, against Fresno State and San Jose State at home on Friday and Sunday. UH (2-1 WAC) still has a chance to win the conference regular season.
"We played a solid match for almost the entire game. Playing a good team like this before Fresno and San Jose is exactly what we needed," Nagamine said. "We’re ready to come home. I’m hoping we can get a huge crowd out for Friday and Sunday."
Patacchia loses in second round
Hawaii surfer Fred Patacchia lost his second-round heat on Sunday to Brett Simpson and was eliminated from the Quiksilver Pro France at La Graviere.
Simpson moved on to the third round in the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour contest.

Hawaii gymnast Nani Vercruyssen placed eighth in synchronized trampoline at the World Cup in Odense, Denmark, on Saturday with teammate Savannah Vinsant.
Vercruyssen also placed 24th in individual trampoline against competitors from around the world.
