The University of Hawaii’s Nov. 12 football game at Nevada will be broadcast on ESPNU, the Western Athletic Conference announced today.
The game had been scheduled for UH’s pay-per-view broadcast.
But Oceanic Time Warner Cable said the uncharged "bonus" addition of the Nevada-Las Vegas game to its University of Hawaii pay-per-view lineup last month will take the place of the Nevada game, eliminating the need for a refund to season package purchasers.
Last year Oceanic gave refunds when ESPN made a late pickup of the Boise State game. "This year in anticipation of ESPN possibly picking up another UH game late in the season we decided to bonus in the UNLV game," said Bob Barlow, Oceanic president. "If ESPN did pick up another game we had a substitute, if they didn’t our season ticket PPV customers would get an additional no-charge pay-per-view telecast."
Under terms of its agreement with the WAC, ESPN may pick up a game up to 21 days before the scheduled kickoff.
The start time has been moved to a 7:15 p.m. Pacific Time (5:15 p.m. Hawaii Time) kickoff to accommodate the broadcast.
The original kickoff had been listed as 1:05 p.m. Pacific Time (11:05 a.m. Hawaii Time).
A staffer at the National Weather Service in Reno said average high temperatures for that date are usually in the mid-to-high 50s at 1 p.m. and low-to-mid 40s after 7 p.m.
UH’s last night game at Mackay Stadium, an ESPN appearance in 2007, had temperatures that dropped into the 30s.
Meanwhile, Oceanic said it is adding the Nov. 27 Wahine basketball game against Texas "as a substitute for the game that was eliminated when the Rainbow Classic was canceled."
