A man called Honolulu police to report hearing about six gunshots at the time a woman was shot and killed near a Kapiolani Boulevard intersection at the start of a highway shooting spree June 3, according to a 911 tape released today by the city.
The man said he heard about six shots that didn’t sound like they came from a rifle.
He also said in his 12:43 a.m. call that he saw a white mini-van without its lights on along Kapiolani Boulevard.
The victim, Tammy Nguyen, was idling her van at a red light at the Kapiolani Boulevard intersection when she was shot multiple times, according to police.
The tape was among five calls that a state judge ordered the city to release in connection with the Star-Advertiser’s lawsuit seeking 911 calls and dispatch tapes related to the shooting rampage that also wounded two drivers on the H-1 freeway.
The city released the tapes of four other calls last Friday.
Toby Stangel faces murder, attempted murder and other charges related to what police have said appeared to be random shootings.
His trial is scheduled for the week of Dec. 5.
