Fest honors all things taro
The Second Annual Taro Fest celebrates the Hawaiian staple food Sunday at Haleiwa Farmers Market.
Included in the 60 booths will be taro creations to sample and purchase.
Also part of the festivities are the heaviest taro contest, cultural demonstrations, musical entertainment and shuttles to Na Mea Kupono, a taro loi.
The market, open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is near Haleiwa Beach Park. Call 388-9696.
Healthy cooking for diabetics
Join chef Rebecca Woodland at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26 for a plant-based cooking class tailored for those with diabetes.
Students will sample and take home low-glycemic recipes that can help control diabetes, promote heart health and may also reduce the risk of some cancers.
The class will be held at the Wellness Center auditorium at Castle Medical Center.
Cost is $15, $20 per couple and $10 seniors and students.
Seating is limited, and payment and reservations are required at least two days in advance.

Summer rolls on class menu
Learn to make summer rolls and "a surprise dessert" from Vietnamese cooking instructor Pam Loo from 10:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 29 at Wahiawa Botanical Gardens.
