Despite a tight right hamstring, Hawaii right wideout Royce Pollard said he expects to play in Saturday’s game against New Mexico State.
“Of course,” said Pollard, who did not participate in Tuesday’s practice. “Everybody expects to play every week.”
Pollard, a senior co-captain, leads the Warriors in scoring (42 points), catches (39) and receiving yards (637).
He suffered the injury while running a deep route against San Jose State. He left the game for two possessions, got treatment in the training room, then returned to play.
“I didn’t want to leave my guys hanging,” Pollard said. “My ambitions are what made me want to come back. I was always taught to fight through pain. It’s not new.”
The Warriors are exploring options if Pollard is not available to play. One is to activate freshman Trevor Davis, who has maintained his redshirt eligibility by not playing in a game this season.
Tuesday, Davis practiced with the first-team offense.
“I’ll do whatever it takes to help the team,” Davis said. “If they want me to redshirt, fine by me. If they want me to play, that’s fine, too.”
Pollard has been designated as a mentor to Davis. They are roommates on the road. Davis has been on the travel roster for all three UH trips.
“I’ve been helping him out,” Pollard said. “He’s my protege. He’s going to be great.”
The past two days, Pollard has helped Davis with identifying defensive schemes. Today, they will work on releasing from grasping defenders.
“My releases are a little sloppy right now,” Davis said.
Terence Bell, who has rotated between slotback and wideout, also will compete at right wideout.
Stutzmann’s move on hold
Head coach Greg McMackin said he will delay plans to move Billy Ray Stutzmann from left slotback.
Miah Ostrowski’s return gives the Warriors three starting slotbacks for the two positions. Justin Clapp started the past four games at right slotback. When Ostrowski played against San Jose State, Clapp split reps with Stutzmann at left slotback. Ostrowski had missed three games because of a dislocated joint in his right foot.
“There’s been a lot of talk,” Stutzmann said of a possible move to wideout. “Nothing has been set yet. Wherever they put me, I’ll produce.”
Stutzmann, a sophomore from Saint Louis School, was a wideout last season. He moved to slotback during spring training.
“I’m getting more comfortable each week,” Stutzmann said. “It’s becoming second nature out there.”
