6 hurt, 1 badly, as car and van crash on Hawaii island

Six people were injured during a two-vehicle crash that shut down Highway 19 in Laupahoehoe on Hawaii island for about two hours Saturday morning.

The incident occurred just before 7 a.m. near the 30th mile marker, the Hawaii County Fire Department said.

When firefighters arrived, they found a van lying on the side on the highway. Five passengers removed themselves from the vehicle while the driver, who was pinned, required assistance. The second vehicle, a car, was in a ditch. The driver, the sole occupant, also was pinned and needed help.

Those injured were taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital and Hilo Medical Center. One person was later to the Queen’s Medical Center, apparently in critical condition, a police source said.

The highway was reopened about 9:15 a.m.
