A Honolulu-based advocacy group for survivors of human trafficking will be sending outreach workers to the streets when the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation comes to town next month.

Pacific Alliance to Stop Slavery Executive Director Kathryn Xian says the group is bracing for traffickers of prostitution to see APEC as a prime business opportunity. 

She says her group is already seeing signs of increased prostitution leading up to the high-profile international event that’s expected to bring 20,000 business and political leaders. 

Honolulu police say they’re bracing for APEC like any other big event.

APEC is one of the largest and most important events Hawaii has hosted and prostitution is among the many security issues law enforcement faces.
