Bad weather and heavy cloud cover over the Koolau Range this morning continue to hamper efforts to rescue a father and son who got lost while hiking on the Waimano Trail above Pearl City in Central Oahu and had to spend the night on a ridge.

Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman, said weather conditions this morning were too dangerous for a helicopter to rescue the men.

Fire rescue personnel were able to locate the men using GPS on their cell phone last night. However, rescue personnel were unable to re-establish contact this morning, Seelig said.

The two men are uninjured, got lost and ended up on the ridge, where they had to spend the night, Seelig said.

If the hikers cannot be airlifted off the ridge, Seelig said, rescue personnel may have to try to reach them by foot and escort them off the ridge.
