A service for the Kailua man allegedly shot by an off-duty federal agent in Waikiki last week will be held Wednesday, a day before the suspect is scheduled to make his first court appearance.
Visitation for Kollin Kealii Elderts, 23, is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary in Kaneohe. The service is at 11:30 a.m.
Elderts died Saturday after being shot at about 3 a.m. during an altercation with the off-duty agent, police said.
Christopher Deedy, a State Department special agent here to help with security for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, was charged with second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was placed on paid leave following the shooting and released from jail after posting $250,000 bail. His initial court hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
Friends who paid tribute to Elderts on Facebook remembered the Kalaheo High School graduate as an upbeat person quick to lift others’ spirits. "I could never forget your wonderful personality and your big smile," wrote one.
The mortuary listed Elderts’ occupation as a laborer.
Elderts is survived by parents Kendall and Jenell Elderts, mother Eydie Shelley and brothers Zachary Elderts, Justin I. and Keola Bruhn, Cameron and Donovan Shelley, and Jaren and James Elderts-Bruhn.
