The wins have been few and far between for Brennan Clark at Boston College.
The 2008 University High graduate has tried everything — including a move to outside hitter as a junior despite her 5-foot-8 frame — to help an Eagles program that has been in a funk since her freshman season.
The numbers aren’t pretty. Boston College is 36-88 over the past four seasons and 8-69 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Clark has been one of the few bright spots over that period, currently ranking second on the school’s all-time dig list with 1,754.
As she prepares for the final home matches of her career this Friday and Sunday, she acknowledges it’s been tough, but credits a strong bond with her teammates that has helped her persevere.
"It’s been a struggle," Clark said. "I think every year we’ve had a really close team and that kind of helps to keep you grounded."

"A team that can get along through that many losses is something special, so it’s been nice in that sense."
Clark, who didn’t start playing volleyball until the eighth grade, also participated on University’s softball, basketball and track teams her freshman year of high school.
It wasn’t until sitting down with her father, Derek, midway through her sophomore year that she decided volleyball was her best option at getting a college education.
"My dad said I needed to narrow down my sports and I told him I wanted to get a Division I scholarship in volleyball," Clark said. "From then on that was my main focus and I dropped all of my other sports."
Clark made a commitment to Brigham Young and was set to be a Cougar when a scholarship at Boston College opened up her senior year of high school.
A double major in human development and sociology with a minor in special education, academics was a big part of Clark’s college choice.
Without visiting the school, Clark decided to take the scholarship at Boston College and was reassured of her decision when she finally visited the campus in April 2008.
"I absolutely loved it," she said. "The campus is so beautiful and even though I knew it would be cold here, I thought four years wasn’t that long."
Just like that, Clark finds herself at the end of a stellar career. She’ll finish it as one of five Eagles ever to play in at least 430 sets. She’ll fall short of the school’s all-time leader in total digs, but will play her final home match against one of the teams she enjoys facing the most.
"I’m excited because it’s Duke … which has a really good team and amazing hitters," she said. "I play defense, so that’s always exciting to play against top hitters like that."
She’s been to see a Boston Bruins hockey game, and one of the main reasons she enjoys Boston is the atmosphere surrounding all of the area’s professional sports.
Her knowledge of sports extends to the college level, making the Eagles’ road trips to North Carolina one of her favorites.
"Everyone knows that’s Coach (Krzyzewski’s) court and all the hype surrounding it," Clark said of playing at Cameron Indoor Stadium. "That and we got to go to the North Carolina basketball museum to see (Michael Jordan’s) uniform and all the great coaches … was pretty cool."
After its final homestand of the season, Boston College plays one last game at Maryland on Nov. 23.
