Hawaii cornerback Mike Edwards said he will have an MRI to determine the severity of a subluxed shoulder.
But he insisted the injury will not prevent him from playing in Saturday’s football game against Fresno State.
Edwards suffered the injury when he was struck out of bounds by a Utah State player two weeks ago. The injury, in which the joint pops out and then back into the socket, was aggravated twice in the past week’s game against Nevada.
Edwards is the starting field cornerback, playing on the wide side of the formation, and No. 1 kickoff returner. During Wednesday’s practice. Edwards caught the kickoffs, but cornerback Tank Hopkins was used for the runbacks.
"It’s all good," Edwards said. "I’ll be all right."
Edwards, who played eight games as a Tennessee freshman in 2009, was considered one of the Warriors’ top 2011 recruits. He has received high marks as a cornerback, where he usually draws an opponent’s best receiver.
"I’m still learning," said Edwards, a sophomore. "I haven’t had the season I thought I would have coming in."
Edwards said he is adjusting to the zone coverages the Warriors often employ in the secondary.
"His background is man coverage and being on an island," defensive coordinator Dave Aranda said. "We do that some. But there are times he has to play different zones."
Strong safety Richard Torres, who serves as a mentor, offers tips on zone concepts.
"Our defense is based on everyone doing their job," Torres said. "It’s not one person on an island. As a corner, you’re not locked into one receiver. It’s getting your eyes in the right places and reading your keys. He’s coming along, by leaps and bounds. Coming in, he was a big-time prospect. I feel he’s lived up to it. He has a great work ethic."
Edwards has one interception, but felt he should have made three more. Against Utah State, a potential interception slipped past, resulting in a touchdown.
"You’re going to win some, you’re going to lose some," Edwards said, "but it hurts when you lose some because it feels like you lost a lot. I want to stop everything. In all reality, there’s no corner who can stop everything. If I lose, I have to have a short memory and get better the next time. I have to continue to work hard so I can win more than I lose."
