Sophomore guard Garrett Jefferson scored the go-ahead basket on a putback with 3.1 seconds left and the Hawaii men’s basketball team held off Pacific, 75-70, tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

A crowd of about 4,500 witnessed a wild finish. Pacific tied it up on a 3-pointer with 11.6 seconds left and UH freshman point guard Shaquille Stokes missed a top-arc 3-pointer at the other end.

But sophomore forward Trevor Wiseman tipped the ball to Jefferson on the rebound, and Jefferson made good on the first field goal of his UH career.

Pacific turned the ball over on the ensuing fullcourt heave and senior guard Zane Johnson iced the game with two free throws. UH improved to 2-2 on the season.

Johnson had a team-high 21 points for UH, albeit on 4-for-17 shooting. Junior forward Joston Thomas made his first start of the season and fouled out with 14 points and five rebounds.

Stokes dished a career-high 10 assists in the win.

Pacific (2-2) was led by point guard Lorenzo McCloud, who scored 23 with four assists.

The teams meet again Dec. 6 in Stockton, Calif.
