Parking garage fire prompts partial high-rise evacuation in Waikiki
A fire at a residential building in Waikiki caused about $60,000 in damage this morning and forced about a couple dozen residents to evacuate.
The fire started in the third floor of the parking garage of the 21-floor Waikiki Lanais condominium at 5:18 a.m., said Honolulu fire Capt. Rick Karasaki.
He estimated a couple dozen people were evacuated from the building, at Liliuokalani Avenue and Tusitala Street, as a part of standard procedure, and were allowed to return about 7:30 a.m. No injuries were reported, he said.
He said the cause was not determined, but fire investigators found the fire originated in a pile of old mattresses and a chest of drawers behind a truck.
After the fire broke out, it spread to the nearby truck and melted its gas tank. The gas from the truck caused the fire to spread to surrounding cars, Karasaki said.
Five engines, two ladder rescue trucks and a battalion chief were dispatched to the blaze.

“There were a lot of resources dedicated to this fire,” Karasaki said.
