Strong tradewinds, high surf and fire danger in weather forecast

Breezy conditions, sunny skies and high surf are predicted for Hawaii today. But the strong trade winds and low humidity mean a greater chance of brush fires, the National Weather Service warns.

A high press system north of the state continues to send strong trade winds of 10 to 25 mph with gusts of 35 mph. But the National Weather Service says winds are expected to diminish through this evening.

However gale warnings are in effect for mariners in the Palilolo and Alenenuihaha channels through this evening and small craft advisories are also in effect for coastal waters.

The north, east and west-facing shores of Oahu, Kauai, Molokai and Maui and east facing shores of Lanai are under a high surf advisory until 6 p.m.

Surf on the north shores of Oahu is expected to reach heights of 19 to 23 feet today, then lower to 8 to 12 feet on Monday. East and west shores should see 8 to 12 foot waves today, lowering to 4 to 7 feet on Monday on the west side and 6 to 9 feet on east shores on Monday.

The National Weather Service also issued a red flag warning until 6 p.m. because of fire danger in leeward areas because of gusty trade winds and low humidity.
