Firefighters return to Sandy Beach area to douse brush fire

Firefighters contained a small brush fire in an hour after it was first reported at 3 p.m. in the Sandy Beach area Monday.

Fire officials were unsure whether it was related to Sunday’s brush fire in the same area that was sparked by a Jeep fire.

Air 1 made water drops, and three to four companies responded.

The fire was less than a half acre in size. Also, a deep-seated fire in a pile of mulch made it difficult for firefighters to douse.

Fire Capt. Rick Karasaki said the fire is burning new brush, but it may be related to Sunday’s blaze, which blackened 50 acres around the Hawaii Kai Golf Course.

Fire personnel located the Jeep owners, and it was determined that an electrical malfunction caused the Jeep to burn, which in turn started the brush fire.
