Quarterback Shane Austin has jarring memories of the summer of 2007, his first month with the Hawaii football team.
Austin was the scout quarterback facing the Warriors’ No. 1 defense.
"My first play ever, I got high-lowed,"Austin recalled, with linebacker R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane delivering the biggest thud.
"I think that was the hardest hit I’ve ever taken," Austin said. "I got that one out of the way early. I learned. It’s like a giant wave. You have to relax and take it. There’s no fighting it."
Austin is one of 26 UH seniors who will take the traditional senior walk following the Warriors’ regular-season finale against Brigham Young on Saturday afternoon. (A 27th senior, left tackle Austin Hansen, will not participate.)
Austin, Hansen, left tackle Clayton Laurel, center Matagisila Lefiti, defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga, defensive end Alasi Toilolo, safety Kenny Estes, and receivers Royce Pollard, Joe Avery and Jett Jasper are the holdovers from the 2007 team that went 12-0 during the regular season and played in the 2008 Sugar Bowl. Estes, who was activated for the final two games, is the only current Warrior to have played in 2007. The rest, known as the OGs (original gangstas), redshirted that year.
"We were here when June (Jones) was here," Jasper said. "I can remember when we wore Nike. I can remember when there was no soap (in the locker room and showers)."
Meatoga recalled the work ethic of the 2007 leaders, such as quarterback Colt Brennan, slotback Davone Bess, offensive lineman Hercules Satele and defensive tackle Mike Lafaele.
"Once Saturday came around, you wouldn’t know those were the same guys you were cruising with off the field," Meatoga said. "They were perfectionists. They were a bunch of guys you wouldn’t want to mess with come Saturday."
Estes said: "Every team has its own personality. I’ve been a part of five teams. Every year has been a whole different experience. Guys would leave. Guys would come in. But there was always camaraderie."
