Kono still in second in LPGA qualifying
Honolulu’s Stephanie Kono remains in second at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Kono shot a second-round 71 Thursday and is at 6-under-par 138, two shots behind leader Christine Song.
There were no scores in the 60s on a breezy day at the Legends Course. Kono, a three-time All-American now in her final year at UCLA, finished with birdie when she hit her 175-yard approach shot to the 18th a foot from the hole — with a 20-mph wind in her face.
Sacred Hearts graduate Ayaka Kaneko also shot 71 and moved up to 64th at 150. Maui’s Shayna Miyajima (80—154) dropped out of the top 100 after shooting 75.
Hilo’s Kimberly Kim (79—168) is next-to-last.
The field is cut to the top 70 and ties after Saturday’s fourth round. The top 40 and ties after Sunday’s round receive 2012 LPGA membership.
Wilson now ninth in PGA qualifying
A second-round 71 moved Kaneohe’s Dean Wilson up to ninth at the PGA Tour’s Final Stage qualifying, in La Quinta, Calif. Wilson is at 6-under-par 138, four shots off the lead of Will Claxton.
There are 172 players in the field. The top 25 and ties get PGA cards and the rest are eligible for the Nationwide Tour.
