3 rescued from overturned boat off airport

Coast Guard, Honolulu Fire Department and city life guard personnel joined forces to rescue three men off an overturned boat in waters off the Honolulu Airport reef runway Saturday afternoon.

The 15-foot fiberglass recreational boat capsized about a mile offshore shortly before 12:30 p.m., said Coast Guard Lt. Leigh Cotterell.

Ocean safety lifeguards on Jet Skis retrieved three men, ages 51, 44 and 43, and transferred them to a Coast Guard boat, Cotterell said. From there, they were brought ashore at Keehi Lagoon, he said.

The three men, who were wearing life jackets, were not injured.

The owner of the boat is making arrangements to have the boat brought ashore, Cotterell said.
