Police identify man killed in North Kohala crash
Hawaii County police identified a 25-year-old Hawi man who died Saturday from injuries he sustained when he lost control of his truck and ran off the road on Akoni Pule Highway in North Kohala.
Police identified the driver as Reed I.S. Shiraishi. Police believe that speed and alcohol use were factors in this crash.
The accident occurred at 2:11 a.m. on Route 270 about a half-mile north of the 8-mile marker.
North Kohala patrol officers said Shiraishi was driving a 2010 Toyota 4-door sedan traveling north on Akoni Pule Highway when he lost control of his car and ran off the left side of the road and down an embankment, where the vehicle rolled over several times.
Shiraishi, who was wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene.
He is the 21st traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 24 at this time last year.
