Gambling suspects arrested in Chinatown
Four people were arrested on suspicion of gambling in Chinatown early Tuesday morning at the same building where police found various electronic gaming machines 15 months ago.
Arrested at 162 N. King St., between Kekaulike and River streets, at about 12:05 a.m. Tuesday on misdemeanor gambling counts were a woman, 36, of no permanent address; a man, 60, of a downtown address; a Waikiki man, 41; and a Mililani man, 51.
Details of the arrests were not available. Officers from the Honolulu Police Department’s Narcotics and Vice Division could not be reached for comment.
On Sept. 15, 2010, Chinatown patrol officers responded to reports of gunfire and a robbery on the second floor of 162 N. King St. When the officers got upstairs, they found no evidence of either a robbery or a shooting. But about a dozen illegal video gaming machines were found and later confiscated.
Skin diver who drowned was from Honolulu
An autopsy on Monday found that a 45-year-old man drowned Friday night while diving at night in waters off Kahana Bay.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Samuel Kahaloa of Honolulu and classified the death as accidental.
The man was skin diving with his son when they got caught in a current at about 10 p.m. Friday, a Fire Department spokesman said.
The son was able to make it to shore, but his father was taken out to sea by the current.
A Honolulu Fire Department helicopter dropped rescue personnel into the water, and workers were able to retrieve the man in about 10 to 15 feet of water, 200 to 300 yards offshore.
Pair held in stabbing, attempted robbery
Police arrested a 25-year-old Mililani man and a 17-year-old boy in connection with the stabbing of a man during a robbery attempt Sunday near a market in Mililani.
Police said the two suspects — a 25-year-old man and his 17-year-old partner — stopped the 28-year-old victim, who was walking to work just after 4 p.m.
The 17-year-old asked the man for a cigarette, and then the older man demanded money, police said. When the victim refused, the juvenile allegedly punched the victim in the face, and the 25-year-old man took out a hunting knife and tried to stab the victim, police said.
The victim blocked the knife with his hand and suffered a cut. The 17-year-old was also injured during the struggle, police said.
The victim ran to a nearby store and called police.
The juvenile suspect was taken to the hospital. The victim suffered minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene, police said.
Officers found the 25-year-old suspect, who was arrested for investigation of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree robbery.
