STOCKTON, Calif. » Gib Arnold said he didn’t know if a team he has coached has ever been 2-for-16 from 3-point range.
The Hawaii men’s basketball coach was looking at the stat sheet after Tuesday night’s 64-54 loss to Pacific — a team the Warriors beat just 11 days ago in Honolulu.
"We just really struggled, especially from the 3-point line," Arnold said. "Guys like Zane Johnson, who are outstanding shooters, going 1-for-7, that’s tough. And Hauns (Brereton) is a real good shooter, going 0-for-3, that’s (our) two best shooters combined going 1-for-10."
There were a couple of reasons the Rainbow Warriors couldn’t duplicate their 75-70 win on Nov. 25. They finished Tuesday 20-for-57 from the floor. They forced 10 turnovers after forcing 17 at home. They couldn’t stop the Tigers from milking the clock and slowing the pace of the game.
But most of all, they couldn’t shoot straight.
"It’s tough to get shots off of a pressure defense like that," said Johnson, who finished with nine points. "I’ve got to learn from what I’ve done and try to get my teammates open better and create for others better."
Meantime, Hawaii (2-4) held the Tigers (4-3) to 41 percent shooting (24-for-59). However, Khalil Kelley was a force, making all seven of his shots and finishing with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
The rebounding was fairly even, with the Warriors holding a 38-35 edge. But a sequence late in the game belied those numbers. Pacific was able to work more than 2 minutes off clock, beginning at the 3:19 mark.
With a 58-50 lead, the Tigers worked 20 seconds before Brereton committed a foul. They then worked another 30 seconds before Colin Beatty missed a 3-pointer. Travis Fulton tipped the rebound back out and Pacific was able to work another 35 seconds before Markus Duran missed a 3-pointer. Incredibly, Beatty tipped that rebound back out and the Tigers maintained possession.
Finally, with 1:15 left, Lorenzo McCloud missed a 3-pointer and Joston Thomas secured the rebound for the Warriors.
"I thought we really guarded three, four times in a row," Arnold said. "They (took) two 3s in, I think, the last second of the shot clock. We were guarding them, they had to shoot long shots, and those balls bounced out long and they got them and we had to guard them again."
Said Johnson, "That’s tough. When teams get offensive rebounds after we get them down to under five seconds. It’s very frustrating."
Not, obviously, for Tigers coach Bob Thomason.
"I wish I could say that’s a play we have," Thomason said. "They didn’t foul us and that was even better. When you go from 3 minutes to 1 minute, (that’s huge). You know, they could hit a 3, they make a foul, we miss a one-and-one, you know how basketball is. It can go real fast."
Joston Thomas led Hawaii with 11 points and nine rebounds. Vander Joaquim scored 10 points. Kelley was the only Pacific player in double figures, but the Tigers had seven others score at least five.
The Warriors return home to face UC Davis on Sunday.
