Martial arts fighter charged with manslaughter after Hilo sports bar incident

21-year-old Waylen Carenio of Hilo is charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of a 44-year-old man following an altercation Saturday morning fronting a sports bar in Hilo.

HILO » A 21-year-old amateur mixed martial arts fighter who was on probation for domestic abuse is charged with manslaughter in the death of a man found unconscious outside a Hilo sports bar.

According to court records, Waylen Keone Carenio was on probation for domestic abuse at the time of Saturday’s incident.

Carenio is being held on $50,000 bail and was expected to appear in court today.

Hawaii County Police Lt. Greg Esteban tells Hawaii Tribune-Herald an autopsy on 44-year-old Roy Joseph Williams Jr. shows he died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Witnesses say the two men were involved in a fight and that Williams fell and hit his head on the pavement. Karma Hawaii owner Summer Mochida says the fight didn’t happen on the bar’s grounds.
