After ASU flap, Jones says he’s happy at SMU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. » June Jones says he’s very happy being SMU’s coach, even though he was set to leave for Arizona State and has been contacted by multiple schools about vacant head coaching jobs.

“It was something that happened very fast. One of the prices of winning is you get contacted a lot of times for different opportunities,” Jones said Thursday. “I had an opportunity that appealed, so I listened. I’m very happy at SMU.”

Jones was part of an appearance for the BBVA Compass Bowl a day after his agent, Leigh Steinberg, believed there was an agreement in place for Jones to become Arizona State’s coach.

Asked if there was an agreement with Arizona State, Jones said Steinberg dealt with all the details.

“I was kind of not privy to all that, whether it was going to happen or not. I never got the call that it was going to happen,” Jones said. “So I wish Arizona State well, and we’re going to do well.”

Fedora will coach USM in Hawaii Bowl

Less than a week after Southern Miss won its first Conference USA title since 2003, the program is looking for a new coach.

North Carolina said Thursday that it will hire Larry Fedora away from the Golden Eagles as its new head coach, pending final approval by the school’s trustees Friday morning. Fedora, 49, met with Southern Miss players and coaches on Thursday, revealing that he was leaving but will coach the 22nd-ranked Golden Eagles in the Dec. 24 Hawaii Bowl against Nevada.

“We want to see this thing through,” Fedora said. “This could be the only team in 100 years of football that wins 12 games. We want to get that 12th win.”

Weis hired at Kansas

Charlie Weis will be the next head coach at Kansas, the school announced Thursday evening.

Florida’s offensive coordinator for this season, Weis takes his second college head coaching job. He previously coached five seasons at Notre Dame before being fired in 2009. He was the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2010 and joined Will Muschamp’s staff at Florida for this season.

Florida went 6-6 this year, with the Gators’ offense ranking 102nd nationally with 334.17 yards per game.
