It has been 70 years since the horrific assault on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese navy. At the time, communications were incredibly slow, and it sometimes took hours to figure out what was going on.
Today, however, communications are so speedy there’s almost no time to reflect.
The National Park Service hosted a gathering of veterans and historians last week to help put it all in perspective, and the three-day event was carried on CSPAN. This Sunday, highlights of the symposium will be rebroadcast on CSPAN3. All times are Hawaii times:
» 3 a.m. — The 70th Pearl Harbor Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony
» 6:30 a.m. — A tour of the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center with chief historian Daniel Martinez
» 7 a.m. — An interview with Martinez
» 7:30 a.m. to noon — Highlights from the symposium, with comments by retired Naval Academy history professor Craig Symonds at 9 a.m. and Craig Shirley, author of "December 1941: 31 Days that Changed America and Saved the World," at 11 a.m.
» Noon — Repeat of the 70th Pearl Harbor Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony
