The Hawaii men’s basketball team got back on track with a 74-61 win over UC Davis today at the Stan Sheriff Center.

UH shot 56.3 percent from the field and broke open the game with a 14-0 run in the final 10 minutes behind the play of sophomore point guard Bobby Miles, who finished off what senior Miah Ostrowski started in his first game of the season.

Ostrowski notched eight assists in getting the start at the point just over a week after playing his final game of the season as a slotback with the UH football team. And Miles had several big plays at both ends of the floor in igniting the Rainbow Warriors (3-4) down the stretch.

A crowd of about 4,000 saw UH rebound from road losses at Pepperdine and Pacific against a future regular opponent of the Big West Conference. UCD fell to 1-8 at the start of a five-game road trip.

Junior center Vander Joaquim came off the bench to notch his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Senior guard Zane Johnson was also a reserve at the start as UH coach Gib Arnold looked to shake things up, but Johnson was efficient in scoring 19 points on seven shots.

UH trailed by five at halftime, but went ahead 47-46 on an Ostrowski fast-break assist to Miles with 14:13 to play.

The Aggies recaptured a five-point lead at 56-51, but Miles and Joaquim fed each other for baskets to ignite the game-breaking run. 

Eleven first-half turnovers crippled UH, as the Aggies closed the period on a 7-0 run and led 39-34 at the break.

But UH shot 56.3 percent to 35.7 percent for UCD.

That was despite five assists and no turnovers in the first half by Ostrowski.
