Henry Calucag Jr., left, talked with his attorney in this 2007 file photo. Today he pleaded guilty to fraud and will serve 16 years.

A Honolulu man who was a suspect in the murder of an acquaintance found shot to death in the Philippines pleaded guilty to wire fraud and will go to prison for 16 years.

Henry Calucag, Jr., was also facing wire fraud and other charges in connection with Arthur Young, who disappeared after traveling to the Philippines in 1990, and Douglas Ho, who was never seen again after traveling to the Philippines in 2004.

Calucag, 62, was never charged with the murder of John Elwin, whose body was found with gunshot wounds to the back, and to the back of the head, in a province outside Manila in 2006. But he pleaded guilty in U.S. District this afternoon to one count of wire fraud in a plea deal with the federal prosecutor.

Calucag was charged in connection with money he accepted for the purchase of a condominium from Elwin, who had gone to the Philippnes to meet Calucag when his body was found.

Calucag is already serving a 30-year state prison sentence for forging Elwin’s signature on documents transferring title to land on Kauai to himself and for using Elwin’s credit cards to make Internet purchases after Elwin was dead.
