BSN - Waipahu resident Bridget Nishimura prepares to enter her Mitsubishi "I" during the unveiling of the new Mitsubishi "I" electric vehicle on Monday, Dec. 12, 2011 at the State Capitol in downtown Honolulu. (Jamm Aquino/Honolulu Star-Advertiser).

Bridget and Bryson Nishimura took delivery of their new, all-electric  Mitsubishi "i" this morning at the state Capitol and were congratulated by Gov. Neil Abercrombie, officials of Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. and Nick Cutter, president of Cutter Mitsubishi.

The Nishimuras are the first retail customers in the United States to buy and take delivery of the new elecric vehicle model.

"We ordered it in April," Bridget said on the Capitol steps. They bought the car sight unseen, and took their first drive before state, energy and business officials and gathered press.

The ceremony marked the fruit borne of a memorandum of understanding signed by Abercrombie and Mitsubishi Motors North America President and CEO Yoichi Yokozawa in June, to formalize cooperation on statewide electric vehicle and EV infrastructure development and deployment.
