WAILUKU >> Authorities are investigating a fire that knocked out 911 emergency service on Maui and Lanai.
All service was restored Monday after a fire Sunday on a utility pole damaged a Hawaiian Telcom fiber-optic cable bundle.
Maui Police Lt. Wayne Ibarra says he’s not aware of any problems caused by the interruption. The Maui News reported Tuesday police and emergency responders were able to field calls because Hawaiian Telcom rerouted 911 calls to police stations, which normally go to one center.
A Hawaiian Telcom spokesman says the outage also affected some telephone calls and Internet service, along with interruptions to cell phone services of providers using Hawaiian Telcom services to connect their cell towers.
Fire Capt. Paul Haake says the fire is under investigation.
