THE HYATT Waikiki, across the street from Kahanamoku’s statue, got a strong plug Monday on NBC’s “Today.” Al Roker’s segment about “affordable warm-weather getaways” with Travel + Leisure’s Nilou Motamed led off with the Hyatt and its $219 rooms. The show’s Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb followed with Lindsay Lohan’s purse containing $10,000 being stolen from a vehicle while she attended a Laie party. Like most folks, Kathie Lee and Hoda wondered why she was carrying around 10 grand. What’s more, why leave it in a vehicle? …
FLYING HIGH: Jimmy Borges, a tremendous admirer of Frank Sinatra, took the floor and led Monday’s luncheon crowd at Neiman’s Mariposa in singing “Happy Birthday” to Sinatra, as it was the late crooner’s 96th birthday. “Mr. Sinatra taught us (singers) how to phrase and how to tell the story,” Jimmy said. “He was the most important singer of the 20th century.” Jimmy was at Hale Rowland’s table. She was making plans to have him sing at next year’s Koa‘e Kea party. Koa‘e Kea is the organization of Hawaiian Air hostesses who flew on DC-3 prop aircraft. Jimmy said that on a flight home from California on Hawaiian several years ago, he sang “Fly Me to the Moon” in flight over the plane’s microphone after getting permission from a hostess. She told Jimmy he would have gotten a standing ovation, but the passengers could not stand because the “fasten seat belt” sign was on …
ATTORNEY Mike Green and wife Estelle’s daughter, former Mrs. Hawaii Liana Green Wright, had a co-starring, speaking role as a Polynesian dancer in Monday’s “Hawaii Five-0” show. CECILIA BLACKFIELD hosted a free holiday turkey meal at Palama Settlement Thursday for children of the Kalihi-Palama community. Cecilia is a longtime supporter of Palama Settlement, which offers many youth programs. The settlement’s “Malama Palama: Festival of 100 Voices” on Nov. 20, a celebration of its centennial, was a success. “We exceeded our fundraising goal of $85,000 and have reached $90,000 and still counting,” said Paula Rath, event chairwoman. Gov. Neil Abercrombie proclaimed it Palama Settlement Day. A 5-by-10-foot ceramic mural was unveiled. It was made by Palama keiki, taught by the Hawaii Potters’ Guild, which provides free classes for the children …
