Shawna Kuehu’s start-and-stop career with the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team was interrupted again with Friday’s announcement that the sophomore guard will miss the remainder of the season.
A statement cited "personal reasons" for Kuehu’s absence for the rest of the Rainbow Wahine schedule.
"I’m going to support my teammates and coaches to the best of my ability for the rest of the year. I’m looking forward to returning to the team for the 2012-13 season," Kuehu said in the release.
Kuehu missed most of the 2009-10 season due to a knee injury, then earned Western Athletic Conference All-Freshman honors last year.
Injuries again limited her early this season and she averaged 5.1 points and five rebounds in seven games while also posting 11 assists and 11 steals.
She had started the last four games and scored a season-high 13 points in UH’s 66-55 win at Columbia on Dec. 3.
"We fully support Shawna and her decision to take the rest of the season off," UH head coach Dana Takahara-Dias said in the release. "However, there is no sugar-coating that it is a big loss for our team. We will just have to refocus and move forward."
UH’s roster was thinned earlier this month when sophomore point guard Jasmine Ray was granted her release.
However, the Wahine (2-7) gained some depth with the addition of freshman forward/center Kalei Adolpho for Sunday’s 5 p.m. game against Portland State (4-3) at the Stan Sheriff Center to open the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Shootout.
Adolpho, a middle blocker with the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team, joined the basketball team after UH was eliminated from the NCAA volleyball tournament on Dec. 9.
Forward Vicky Tagalicod also could join the active roster as early as Sunday. She transferred from USC last year and was required to sit out the fall semester.
