Today is the last day for Oahu residents to obtain permits from the city allowing them to purchase fireworks for this upcoming New Year’s Eve celebration.

Each permit entitles a person to purchase up to 5,000 firecrackers. There is no limit on the number of permits a person can buy, but firecrackers must be set off only between 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 1 a.m. on Jan. 1.

Permits are available at all satellite city halls until the end of business today.

Firecrackers cannot legally be sold until Dec. 26, but a new city law requires the sale of permits for New Year’s to end by Dec. 21.

This is the first New Year’s celebration under the new law that prohibits all novelty fireworks, including sparklers and fountains.

As of Monday, 2,885 permits had been sold. Last year, there were 10,008 issued for the New Year’s.
