Kylie Maeda and Alex Masaquel saved their best for last, combining for 14 points in overtime as No. 2 ‘Iolani escaped with a 63-49 win over Mid-Pacific Thursday night.
A crowd of about 200 watched at MPI’s Mills Gymnasium.
Clutch play and near-flawless shooting at the free-throw line made the difference for ‘Iolani, which overcame a 35-point performance by MPI guard Kiki Robertson.
The junior shot 8-for-15 from the field and was 14-for-16 at the free-throw line. She also had a team-high nine rebounds. It was the second 30-plus point effort for her against ‘Iolani; in their first meeting, she scored 31 points in a 72-51 loss.
Maeda, who sat with foul trouble for much of the second half, finished with 20 points and was 9-for-9 at the line.
"We expected them to come out hard. Our coaches told us they would," Maeda said. "We weren’t executing our plays. We just have to learn to take our time."
‘Iolani committed 21 turnovers against MPI’s three-quarter court zone press and halfcourt man-to-man defenses in regulation, but had just one in overtime.
Saphyre Rezentes added 13 points while Masaquel tallied 18 points and 12 rebounds, including a crucial steal for a breakaway layup that gave the Raiders a 48-44 lead early in overtime. After a steal by Pua Kahalehoe, Rezentes hit a free throw, and Masaquel added a layup to cap a 7-0 run in the extra period.
Mid-Pacific pulled within 53-48 on a 14-foot runner by Robertson, but ‘Iolani put the game out of reach with free throws. The Raiders were 10-for-10 at the charity stripe in the final 1:27.
The tough win lifted the Raiders to 5-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, 8-2 overall.
Mid-Pacific took another close loss — the Owls fell to Kamehameha 33-32 last Saturday — and dropped to 1-4 in league play (3-8 overall).
Facing what appeared to be a box-and-one, Robertson scored just five points in the opening quarter. The Raiders later switched to their normal man-to-man defense and Robertson scored eight points in the second quarter.
Robertson added nine points in the third quarter to help the Owls stay in range. They led 36-35 on a three-point play by Robertson, but ‘Iolani went on an 8-2 run, sparked by Rezentes.
MPI was down 43-38 late when Robertson swished a 24-foot trey from the top, then drove into the paint for a pull-up jumper to tie it with 47 seconds left.
Rezentes hit one free throw for a 44-43 lead with 20 seconds to go in regulation, but Robertson drew a foul with 14.5 seconds left. She hit the first free-throw to tie it, but missed the second.
‘Iolani had 12 second-half turnovers, including one in the final seconds on a pass that was stolen by Robertson.
From there, however, the Raiders took command. MPI had four giveaways in overtime.
"They don’t give up. Our defense is getting better. We’re playing better team defense," Owls coach Wes Masuda said. "Hopefully, it’ll fall our way once in a while. One thing about our team, they’re very positive. Kiki’s having a good year and she takes pride in her defense. She’s awesome to coach."
