Hauns Brereton scored 22 points off the bench to ignite an 100-73 blowout of South Carolina State on Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Brereton’s career night (9-for-12 shooting) and driving dunk propelled UH to its triple-digit scoring output in nine years.
UH’s last: an 100-81 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Nov. 24, 2002.
UH overcame an abysmal night at the free-throw line (20-for-39) by going 35-for-69 (50.7 percent) from the field. Joston Thomas added 16 point sand 10 rebounds and Zane Johnson had 14.
Brereton threw down a driving dunk and followed it up with a corner 3-pointer to give UH a 53-48 lead and force a SCSU timeout.
The surprising dunk keyed a 27-3 run that put the game away by the midpoint of the second half.
UH closed the first half on a 13-4 run, capped off by Johnson’s left-side 3-pointer to beat the buzzer and cut SCSU’s halftime lead to 42-41.
