Motorcyclist critically injured in New Year’s Eve crash

A 50-year-old motorcyclist  was in critical condition with head and internal injuries after an accident Saturday night on Vineyard Boulevard.

Police said the man’s 1996 black, Honda motorcycle was traveling Ewa at a high rate of speed in the right lane on Vineyard near Waipa Lane  when a 2004 gold Toyota van attempted a lane change from the middle to the right lane and sideswiped the motorcycle at about 6:45 p.m.

Paramedics took the Honolulu man to the hospital in critical condition. A 35-year-old Honolulu woman passenger also went to the hospital, but police said her injuries were minor. The driver of the Toyota was not injured.

Police said speed is a possible factor in the crash. The man and woman on the motorcycle were not wearing helmets, police said.

Police closed the Ewa-bound lanes of North Vineyard Boulevard between Liliha Street and Waipa Lane while they investigated the crash.
