5.8-magnitude quake hits Philippine island region

NEW YORK >> The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a magnitude-5.8 earthquake in the Babuyan Islands region off the northern tip of the Philippines. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue any warnings or advisories.

The USGS said the earthquake struck at 12:36 a.m. Sunday (6:36 a.m. Saturday Hawaii time). Its epicenter, with a depth of 15.8 miles, is about 317 miles north of Manila.

Benito Ramos, who heads the government’s Office of Civil Defense, said the quake woke some people up but did not cause any injuries or damage in at least three provinces where it was felt.
