Children’s choir to sing in new year
China is helping Hawaii celebrate Chinese New Year with a performance by the China Children’s Choir. The group will perform Chinese, American, European and Hawaiian music at Kawaiaha‘o Church at 7 p.m. Jan. 29.
The 42-member choir is made up of performers ages 6 to 14. The choir sang the "Olympic Hymn" at the 2008 Summer Olympics and took first place in the 2010 children’s choir category at the 24th Bela Bartok International Choir Competition and Folklore Festival in Hungary.
The choir was founded in 1983 by conductor Yang Hong Nian, a professor at the China Central Conservatory of Music. Yang and two associates, Yang Li and Tang Chong Qing, will lead the group in its performance here.

2012 orchid shows to be featured in list
Hawaii orchid growers and their exotic and varied blooms will be featured in a list of orchid shows taking place in 2012 that will be published in the Star-Advertiser’s Today section on Jan. 30.

Academy Awards contest to pay $200
Join the Hollywood hoopla over the 84th Academy Awards by casting your ballot in the Star-Advertiser’s Oscarama contest. Entry forms will be available in the Today section and at staradvertiser.com starting Jan. 25, the day after nominations are announced. Readers can guess the winners in the best picture, director, actor, actress, supporting actor and supporting actress categories and a tiebreaker category to be announced.
First prize is $200 cash from the Star-Advertiser, plus dinner at the Halekulani (value $200), courtesy of the Hawaii International Film Festival, and a HIFF premium membership (value $150), which includes 10 tickets to regular screenings and discounted tickets to HIFF’s spring and fall festivals.
The second prize is the Halekulani dinner and HIFF premium membership.

The Academy Awards are announced on Feb. 26. The Oscarama winner will be announced in the Today section on Feb. 27.
