Maryknoll is not going to be pushed around any longer.
The No. 5 Spartans boys basketball team stood up to No. 1 Academy of the Pacific to beat the Dolphins 49-35 on Saturday at Damien’s gym.
Maryknoll (15-5, 3-3 ILH) made it known that three league losses were just about enough, dumping the ball in to 6-foot-9 Tobias Schramm from the outset. Schramm had three post moves, a putback and a baseline jumper in the first 4 minutes, 45 seconds to outscore the Dolphins 10-3 by himself, and checked out for a breather with his team holding a 12-3 lead. The fast start was helped out by AOP’s five turnovers to start the game.
"That’s always been our plan," Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant said. "We try to throw the ball in to him and this time we were fortunate he made some shots and the kids got a little more confident. The last time we played them (a 55-49 win by AOP) they were more physical than us. We wanted to fix that."
AOP (15-4, 5-1) knew the big guy would be a big part of Maryknoll’s plans but was helpless to stop it. After Schramm’s initial outburst, AOP keyed on him and held him to just two points the rest of the way. The Dolphins didn’t match him in scoring until 2 minutes remained in the first half, though.
"Toby played tough," AOP coach Wally Marciel said. "All year we try to bang him, but he is getting better and better. A 6-9 post in Hawaii is tough to guard."

Maryknoll ran the lead to 11 with 5:42 left in the second quarter on a spinning layup by Joshua Burnett, but would not score again for the rest of the half as AOP cut the lead to six going into halftime. They missed three of four free throws late in the second quarter, which would repeat itself in the fourth quarter.
The Dolphins stayed in the locker room until a minute left in halftime while the Spartans were finished talking and were ready to play after just 3 minutes. The strategy session worked for AOP, which forced successive turnovers after the break and scored four straight times, the first two by Wilson Macleod, to erase all of Maryknoll’s hard work and tie it with 5 minutes left in the third quarter.
But the Spartans had a few secret weapons to unveil. Point guard Danny Danbara hit an open 3-pointer on Maryknoll’s next possession in his second game back from injury, and sophomore Kekoa Welsh added two on the break. Welsh, a surprise starter for Maryknoll, scored only four points but was active the entire game, ruling the boards when AOP turned its attention to Schramm.
"Their halfcourt ‘D’ played really well," Marciel said. "They moved us out of our offense that we run. They put it together and they were well prepared, forced us to shoot the ball from the outside and our guys got frustrated when the shots weren’t going down."
Maryknoll ran the lead to seven when John Mayer hit a jumper with 4:36 left. Then Burnett’s free-throw shooting took over.
The referees let the physical game play itself out until a scrum under the basket drew a technical on Marciel. The coach was ejected from the game and was leaving while Burnett stepped to the line and hit four successive free throws, each one drawing a louder reaction from the crowd than the one before. By the time Burnett was done, Maryknoll had an 11-point lead with 4:06 left, plenty of time for Burnett to show off his skills even further.
Maryknoll was called for its first technical foul a minute later, then two more after that, prompting the referee to gather both teams at halfcourt to tell them no more trash-talking would be accepted. The teams combined to shoot 12 free throws in the first three quarters and 26 of them in the fourth. AOP was 9-for-20 from the line in the game and Maryknoll was 16-for-18.
Burnett dominated the last 3 minutes, collecting five rebounds, a steal, a field goal and seven of seven free throws. He led all scorers with 17 points, 11 of them from the line in the fourth quarter as the Dolphins were forced to foul the man with the ball.
"We finally got a chance to shoot a lot of free throws at practice," Grant said. "We were trying to figure out who was going to be our free-throw shooter and he seemed to be the guy above everybody and it was evident today. He hit everything."
