Madden tourney draws celebs
A fundraiser tournament for nonprofit Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance will give fans a chance to battle Colt Brennan, Chad Owens, Vince Manuwai and more former University of Hawaii football players in video games.
The group of athletes, which also includes current NFL players Kealoha Pilares, John Estes and Shawn Lauvao and former UH standouts Corey Paredes, Ryan Grice-Mullen, Vaughn Meatoga and Brashton Satele, will be auctioned off as competitors. All but Manuwai, who plays Call of Duty, will participate in Madden 2012.
Proceeds from the tournament, which will be held on Jan. 28 at The Villa, will benefit PIAA. For information, go to pacificathleticalliance.com.
Pahoa jazzed about new gym
So far, so good for the Pahoa boys basketball team in its new digs.
A brightly lit, brand-new 900-seat gym opened on campus last week for the Daggers, who were the Division II state runners-up last year.
The boys outlasted Waiakea, and later this week will meet rival Kamehameha-Hawaii, the No. 4-ranked team in the state.
"It’s a nice gym, but it echoes in there," KS-Hawaii coach Dominic Pacheco said. "When we play there Saturday, it’ll be rocking."
Pahoa upset KS-Hawaii in a preseason tournament, then lost to the Warriors in regular-season play last month.
