Math workshop geared toward girls
Friday is the deadline to register for Sacred Hearts Academy’s free workshop for girls in junior kindergarten (age 4) to fourth grade that aims to help them succeed at math.
The workshop, which is for girls and their parents, will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Jan. 28 at the school. Space is limited; registration is required.
Chaminade University math professor Mary Pat Sjostrom is the featured speaker. She will talk about mathematics in today’s classrooms and what parents can do at home to develop math-savvy daughters.
Students will be engaged in grade level-appropriate activities facilitated by classroom teachers.

Na Hoku awards accepting entries
Recording artists have until the end of the month to enter their work in the 2012 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.
The Hawai’i Academy of Recording Arts awards are open to material released after Dec. 31, 2010, and available for purchase by Dec. 31, 2011.
HARA membership is not required to enter, and some categories are now open to nonresidents.
Entries must be received by Jan. 31. Entry forms and eligibility rules can be downloaded from the HARA website at www.nahokuhanohano.org.

Rehab Hospital opens stroke center
Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific will host an open house to launch the Stroke Recovery Center of Hawaii from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The new facility offers cutting-edge rehabilitation devices designed to shorten recovery times and prevent secondary ailments.
During the open house, visitors can visit various stations where therapists will provide information on such topics as neurorobotics therapy, driving assessments and devices, and a swallow training system. The event includes demonstrations of an anti-gravity treadmill and bionic leg.
Dr. Gary Okamoto will deliver the keynote address, "Stroke Rehabilitation of the Future," from 10 to 10:30 a.m.

Isle Komen group seeks volunteers
The Hawaii affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure needs volunteers for its education, fundraising and race committees.
Seasoned volunteers with nonprofit experience and new volunteers with fresh ideas are encouraged to attend a training day from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Shriners Children’s Hospital conference room.
Attendees will learn about the history of the agency and receive a 2012 schedule of events.
Volunteers are needed to help with the Pink Tie Ball on March 9, the Kona Marathon for the Cure on June 23 and the 2012 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Oct. 21.

Join the Hollywood hoopla over the 84th Academy Awards by casting your ballot in the Star-Advertiser’s Oscarama contest. Entry forms will be available in the Today section and at staradvertiser.
com starting Wednesday, the day after nominations are announced. Readers can guess the winners in the best picture, director, actor, actress, supporting actor and supporting actress categories and a tiebreaker category to be announced.
First prize is $200 cash from the Star-Advertiser, plus dinner at the Halekulani (value $200), courtesy of the Hawaii International Film Festival, and a HIFF premium membership (value $150), which includes 10 tickets to regular screenings and discounted tickets to HIFF’s spring and fall festivals.

2012 orchid shows to be featured in list
Hawaii orchid growers and their exotic and varied blooms will be featured in a list of orchid shows taking place in 2012 that will be published in the Star-Advertiser’s Today section on Jan. 30.
