UH women’s basketball team defeats New Mexico State

Kamilah Jackson scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Hawaii women’s basketball team to a 51-48 win over New Mexico State today at the Stan Sheriff Center.

UH (7-11 overall) improved to 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference for the first time since the 2002-03 season, despite shooting 32.1 percent from the field and going without a 3-pointer.

Senior forward Tabytha Wampler led the Aggies (4-15, 1-3) with 24 points on 11-for-19 shooting. NMSU shot 40 percent but committed 17 turnovers, to just 10 for the Wahine.

After a NMSU go-ahead shot attempt by Wampler with 30 seconds left missed (and the Aggies didn’t get a foul call), the visitors had to take a foul. UH point guard Alissa Campanero hit two free throws with 25.4 seconds left to put UH up by three.

NMSU missed two 3-point attempts on its final possession coming out of a timeout, and the buzzer sounded.
