Hawaii changed its lineup on Saturday, but not its volleyball fortunes, in a 25-20, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23 loss to Pepperdine in the Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif.
In sweeping the two-match series, the Waves improved to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
The Warriors fell to 2-5 and 1-3. They have lost four consecutive matches.
The Warriors stirred the opening lineup, with freshman Brook Sedore at opposite in place of Johann Timmer, who had started the first six matches. After two swings — a kill and an error — Sedore yielded to sophomore Taylor Averill, who finished the match with 10 kills, a .333 hitting percentage and two solo blocks.
But while the Warriors rebounded after losing the first two sets, they were doomed by untimely errors. Three of the Waves’ final five points came on Warriors mistakes — serves into net by Averill and Steven Hunt, and an attack error by J.P. Marks at aloha ball.
Hunt and Marks each had 15 kills. Marks had the Warriors’ only ace.
Pepperdine freshman Joshua Taylor, a Punahou graduate who led the Waves in Friday’s four-set victory, struggled in the rematch, with nine errors offsetting his 14 kills.
But junior opposite Maurice "Inferno" Torres slammed 21 kills, and left-side hitter Chase Ross contributed 11 kills and hit .364.
The Waves’ outside success opened the way for middle blocker Matt Pollack, who had nine kills without an error and hit .818. In the two matches, Pollack had a combined 21 kills and did not commit an error in 29 swings. Pollack also had his handprints on six of the Waves’ 10.5 blocks.
The Warriors return to Honolulu today. They face Grand Rapids on Friday and Saturday in nonconference matches at the Stan Sheriff Center.
