Man, 57, dies in apparent drowning off Waikiki

A 57-year-old man was pronounced dead after a surfer brought him to shore Wednesday morning in waters off the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki.

Capt. Terry Seelig, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman, said a surfer saw the man in the water in the break known as "Rock Piles" about 8:20 a.m.

He paddled to him, placed him on his surfboard and brought him to the beach.

Fire rescue personnel drove the ambulance to the hospital while paramedics worked on the man.

The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
