The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified an elderly man who died from injuries suffered in a mo-ped crash  as 77-year-old Arthur Ferris of Aiea.

Ferris ran into a curb, and his mo-ped came to rest against a utility pole on Kaonohi Street in Aiea about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

He apparently was not wearing a helmet.

Paramedics took the man in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center, where he died, police said. An autopsy will be conducted today to determine cause of death.

It was the second critical crash involving a senior citizen on a mo-ped this month.

Eufemia Miranda, 74, was critically injured while riding on the back of a mo-ped in Waipahu on Jan. 18. The driver, believed to be her husband, lost control and crashed after running over a road reflector on Hoaeae Street. Both Miranda and the driver weren’t wearing helmets. Miranda hit her head on the asphalt and died that night at the Queen’s Medical Center. The driver of the mo-ped had minor injuries.

Police said there have been 4 traffic fatalities this year, compared with 7 at the same time last year.
