Woman critically injured in car-truck crash on Hawaii island

A woman was critically injured Thursday after her sedan collided with a dump truck in Kurtistown, Hawaii County firefighters said.

The dump truck lost one of its wheels in the crash and sparks from the metal on the road might have caused a fuel line to ignite, firefighters said. The cab of the dump truck was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived in about 4 minutes.

The woman, in her 30s, was trapped in her car, and firefighters tore her vehicle open with heavy equipment to get her out. She was taken to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition, said Hawaii Island fire Battalion Chief Aaron Arbles.

Live electrical wires hampered firefighters’ efforts, and the truck was destroyed, amounting to a loss of $100,000, firefighters said.

The dump truck driver was not hurt in the 9:06 a.m. crash.
