GIVING FAMILIES HOPE | 5. Circuit Judge Ed Kubo, standing left, and his wife, Tammy Kubo, in red, shared a table with state Sen. Will Espero and Chiko Ganhinhin at the Hata Foundation Scholarship dinner Jan. 21 at a downtown social club. The foundation, founded by Ganhinhin's daughter, Liz Hata Watanabe, provides hope and financial help to families with special-needs children.

Leona Hoke, left, Wela Wallwork and Sonya Fredund put their all into a fundraiser for Jane McCabe -- remembered by night-life veterans as "Baby Doll" of Baby Doll & the Surfettes -- Jan. 19 at The Varsity. McCabe is now terminally ill. Hoke, Wallwork and Fredund, all former Surfettes, capped the evening with their rendition of "Makalapua."

DUKE'S ANNIVERSARY | 3. The crowd was wall-to-wall as Ross Anderson, second from left, celebrated the 19th anniversary of Duke's Waikiki Jan. 20 at the Outrigger Waikiki. Duke's manager Dante Kea, left, GM Dylan Ching and executive chef Keith Kang helped Anderson co-host a party that included Hawaiian music by Maunalua and two buffets.
