A longtime nemesis was more than happy to send the high-flying Hawaii women’s basketball team back to earth.
Western Athletic Conference leader Fresno State jumped out to a huge early lead and dealt the Rainbow Wahine an 83-48 defeat at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif., on Saturday, emphatically ending UH’s three-game winning streak.
UH (8-12, 3-2 WAC) fell into a three-way tie for third place with Louisiana Tech and San Jose State.
The Wahine trailed 22-4 after only a few minutes and lost to the Bulldogs for the 12th straight game and 18th time in the past 19 meetings. The biggest reason this time: a season-high 30 turnovers, on which FSU scored 36 points.
"Every team we have faced has put pressure on us," UH coach Dana Takahara-Dias said in a postgame phone interview. "But 30, we coughed the ball up 30 times tonight, and that was just unacceptable. That was very tough to take tonight as we tried to slow down their offensive machine."
FSU (17-4, 5-0) got 23 of Ki-Ki Moore’s 28 points in the first half as the defending WAC champ won for the 12th time in 13 games overall.
The 35-point rout tied for the largest loss margin of the season for UH.
"I do believe the win-loss record, we have worked hard to get, unfortunately we took a step backward tonight," Takahara-Dias said. "We need to take a look at this game and learn from it, and make sure it’s not repeated again and clean up many things we didn’t do well tonight."
Freshman center Kalei Adolpho came off the bench to tie her career high of 14 points. Takahara-Dias listed that as the only bright spot.
UH returns home to take on Idaho and Utah State on Thursday and Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
