Firefighters resume battle against Molokai brush fire
Maui County firefighters resumed efforts this morning to extinguish a 200-acre brush fire in Kaunakakai.
Crews monitored the perimeter of the fire near Hoomalu Drive overnight.
According to Maui fire officials, the fire got within 50 feet of homes in Kalamaula Mauka, just west of Kaunakakai. The fire burned a shipping container with about $5,000 worth of appliances stored inside.
The fire, reported at 1 p.m. Sunday is burning in thick kiawe and crews are expected to be on scene throughout the day.
The fire is the fourth brush fire reported on Molokai since Friday.On Saturday, firefighters were called to attend to a pair of brush fires in Hoolehua.
The first started at 11:22 a.m. on Kalai Highway, near Maunaloa Avenue. The fire consumed a 1,600-square-foot area before being extinguished at 11:45 a.m.

The second fire was reported at 3:10 p.m. on Keonelele Avenue and Lanui Street, west of Hoolehua Airport. The fire, which spread out over 9,000 square feet, was extinguished at 4:25 p.m.
The causes of each of the fires are still under investigation. No injuries were reported in any of the cases.
On Friday, a fire that investigators believe was started by fireworks burned a small patch of brush on the side of Kalae highway in the Kualapuu area.
