Hawaii County firefighters planned to work overnight to contain a 35-acre brush fire that came within feet of homes Tuesday and forced the evacuation of dozens of residents in Kona.
The 2:17 p.m. fire was 95 percent contained by 9 p.m., and firefighters were going to put out hot spots overnight along the perimeters, said Hawaii County Fire Department Battalion Chief Aaron Arbles.
"The brush is pretty dry so it was fast-moving," Arbles said.
Residents in the Pines neighborhood were evacuated at about 4 p.m. because of the smoke and flames and allowed back into their homes at about 9 p.m., according to the Hawaii County City Defense Agency. At one point about 50 people were staying at an evacuation center opened by the American Red Cross at Kekauokalani Gym in Kona.
Firefighters used two helicopters and five engines to dump water on the blaze, which jumped Queen Kaahumanu Highway near Nani Kailua at one point. Two volunteer fire companies and crews using two vehicles from the Army’s Pohakuloa Training Area also helped.
Police closed parts of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Hualalai Road.
No one was hurt and no structures were damaged. The cause remains under investigation.
